What is v60?

Simple Method, Real Taste

V60 is a coffee method for people who want to actually taste their coffee. Clean, light, and clear, it shows what’s inside the cup without hiding anything. It’s not about speed or strength, but about balance and detail.

Created in Japan by Hario, the V60 was designed with one simple goal: better extraction, more control, and cleaner taste. The name comes from the V shape of the dripper and its 60-degree angle.

The V60 gives the barista full control. Water flow, brew time, and strength are decided by the person making the coffee. This control allows the real character of the beans to come through. When brewed correctly, V60 produces a clean, balanced, and aromatic cup that clearly shows the quality of the coffee.

Below, we break down V60 step by step and explain why it is one of the most respected brewing methods in the specialty industry.

What Is V60 Coffee?

V60 is a manual pour-over brewing method. Hot water is poured slowly over ground coffee inside a paper filter. The coffee then flows through the filter and into the cup.

What makes V60 different is its design. The cone shape and the single large hole at the bottom help water move evenly through the coffee bed. This allows more even extraction and better control during brewing. The result is a cup with clarity, balance, and clean flavor.

Because there is no machine or pressure, the final cup depends first on technique and then on the beans. This is why V60 is often used to evaluate coffee quality in professional settings.

Why People Like V60

People like V60 because it is honest. It does not hide anything. Good beans taste good. Poor technique shows quickly. This makes V60 a favorite among baristas and coffee lovers who want to understand coffee better.

Another reason is control. You decide how fast to pour, how long the coffee brews, and how strong the cup feels. This makes the process personal and repeatable. Once you learn the basics, you can make the same good cup every day.

V60 is also a calm way to make coffee. It slows you down and turns coffee into a moment, not just a habit.

What V60 Tastes Like

V60 coffee is known for clarity. The paper filter removes heavy oils, so the cup feels clean and light.

Flavors are easy to identify. Depending on the beans, you may taste fruit, citrus, floral notes, chocolate, or soft sweetness. The coffee is smooth and not bitter when brewed correctly. This is why many people choose V60 when they get tired of heavy or harsh coffee.

V60 is often used for single-origin specialty beans because it allows you to taste where the coffee comes from and how it was processed.

What You Need for V60

V60 does not need expensive equipment. You need a V60 dripper, paper filters, coffee, hot water, and a cup or server.

Freshly roasted beans matter because they hold more aroma and flavor. Grinding the coffee just before brewing improves taste and balance. A kettle helps with control, especially when pouring slowly.

A scale and timer help with consistency. They are not required, but they make it easier to repeat good results, which is important in professional brewing.

How To Make V60 Step by Step (Barista Method)

Use a medium grind, similar to sand. The basic ratio is 16 grams of coffee to 260 grams of water. Water temperature should be around 92–94°C. Total brew time is about 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Place a paper filter in the V60 and rinse it well with hot water. This removes paper taste and warms the dripper and cup. Discard the rinse water.

Add 16 grams of coffee and gently shake to level the coffee bed.

Start the timer and pour 50 grams of water to bloom the coffee. Make sure all the coffee gets wet and wait 30 seconds. This step releases gases and helps improve sweetness.

Pour slowly in circles until you reach 150 grams of water.

Continue pouring until you reach 260 grams at around 2 minutes.

Let the coffee finish dripping by about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The cup should taste clean, balanced, and clear.
